Nearly every block in Portland has a vacant lot or abandoned house. Neighbors are left to decide how to deal with it. Call the owners if you can find them? Call the City? Cut the grass? For answers, Portland residents are meeting with Tia Bowman of the Louisville Metro Office of Housing and Community Development (OHCD). Ms. Bowman’s presentations are designed to equip residents with information and establish priorities to address the issue.

Gary & Judy met at UK when he was teaching architecture and she was studying community development. Eventually, after they got married (nearly 54 years ago!) she persuaded him to move back home to Louisville and Portland where they happily raised their three kids, and did much more along the way!

Ten years ago I was desperately trying to sink my teeth into my new Portland neighborhood. My old Portland neighborhood, where I had spent the previous 25 years, was 2,500 miles away and I was in a real sink or swim situation. Outside of a few rock and roll tours through Louisville in a past life, I knew nothing about Kentucky. Thanks to some Zillowing back in Oregon, I was suddenly the fourth owner of a pristine 19th-century brick mansion on West Main Street.
