Louisville’s Portland Neighborhood Featured On KET

Host Kelsey Starks with Portland resident Kacie Chase

Hello Portland Anchor readers! I’m Kelsey Starks, host of KET’s Inside Louisville.

For two seasons, our Louisville-based team at KET have had the privilege of sharing the amazing people, places, and stories of our city throughout Kentucky. Our January 12th episode took our viewers ‘Inside the Portland Neighborhood.’

We took a deep dive to explore the fascinating history of Louisville’s oldest neighborhood and one of Kentucky’s first settlements. I thought I knew a lot about Portland, but I learned so much about this historic neighborhood. We spoke with Danny Seim at the Portland Museum, who gave us an enriching history lesson about the past, present and future of the neighborhood, including exciting plans for the Portland Museum and the AHOY Children’s Museum. Ed White and I spoke at length about his experience growing up as a third-generation resident in the neighborhood. Angela Hagan, president of Louisville Visual Art, helped us envision the future with a first look at the SPARK sculpture soon to light up their art gallery and artist space, and the people who are truly igniting the heart of the neighborhood. Portland resident Kacie Chase also gives us a look into the future she envisions as she raises her children in the neighborhood.

This neighborhood is at the beginning of a true revitalization which will be pushed ahead by the expansion of Waterfront Park and other investments and development. I hope everyone has a chance to watch and learn this important part of Louisville history. You can watch online at www.ket.org/InsideLouisville. You can stream Inside Louisville anytime at KET.org or on the PBS app.
