The American Legion Shawnee Post 193 held its 11th Annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 19, 2025. As in past years, we partnered with Good Shepherd Catholic Parish and held the event on their grounds. There was a threat of rain that morning, but Mother Nature cooperated with us, and the event was a great success. We estimate 75 kids from 0-10 years old attended.
The Easter Bunny arrived on the Derby City Express before the egg hunt began to greet kids and take pictures. The Derby City Express blew its horn to signal the start of the egg hunt which consisted of about 6,000 eggs placed on the lawns. There was laughter and smiles all around by kids and adults. The kids had all the eggs collected in under 10 minutes!

Following the egg hunt, everyone was invited into Lehman Hall for a free lunch, a coloring activity, and an Easter basket and candy giveaway. Additionally, because of the outpouring of donations and support by our Post members and others in the community, 11 bicycles and numerous door prizes were given away to the kids.

This event is made possible through the generous donations of candy, toys, and money from businesses, members of the community, and others around the greater Louisville area starting with our Post 193 organizations (Legionnaires, Auxiliary, and SAL). Thanks to Good Shepherd Catholic Parish for your continued partnership and donations, Mike Mulrooney at Shirley’s Way, John Stevens of the Outer Loop Kroger, Ironworkers Local 70, Craven’s AC, The Wright Place, the Drew Day Fund, KR Hollkamp, Rose Jenkins, Dan Ludwig, Connie Henkin, Dee Schutz, and all others.

We would also like to thank everyone who gave their time to stuff eggs, assemble Easter baskets, and volunteer on the day of the event. It takes a group of dedicated volunteers to make this event happen each year. Special thanks to Melanie Walker for leading Post 193’s efforts.
This is an awesome event in the Portland neighborhood. We are already planning for next year and hope to see you there!
