The sound of children’s laughter, flowing from the bouncy house, and the chatter of neighbors pondering their hopes for the neighborhood, filled the air at the Portland Now Community picnic. We had hoped forty folks might show up, you can imagine our delight when over seventy people came to the event.

New Directions Breaks Ground on New Roosevelt Senior Housing Project in Portland
New Directions Housing Corporation broke ground on the Roosevelt Senior Apartments at 225 N. 18th Street in the Portland Neighborhood. This $8.9 million dollar project will create 36 subsidized one-bedroom apartments for seniors 62 and older. These apartments will be fully ADA compliant, with such features as roll-in showers, dishwashers, and fully accessible washer and dryer units
The Portland Free Wedding Day!
I am happy to announce that the Portland Free Wedding Day was a success! The first wedding was of Stephane and Charles “Pico” Mitchell, and the second; Tiffany and Matt Cotton. Each wedding was uniquely lovely and memorable. The day was so wonderful and we are hoping to make the Portland Free Wedding Day an annual event!
Portland Now Welcomes New Directors With Community Picnic
In June of every year, Portland Now has an annual meeting to elect a board of directors for the coming year. We are proud to announce that we added nine new directors this year, who will join the ten returning members. All of our Portland Now directors have strong ties to the neighborhood and a deep desire to work in collaboration with others to advocate for the common good of Portland.
City and Neighborhood Leaders Congratulate Portland Anchor on 50 Years!
Louisville’s oldest neighborhood newspaper the Portland Anchor celebrated its 50th anniversary in July 2025 with a special 40-page issue filled to the brim with original reporting and community submissions, including a fair share of congratulations from community leaders and figures from the Anchor’s past and present including Mayor Greenberg, Gordon Brown, and more!
Lafayette Celebration Draws Big Crowd on Rudd
Chants rang out on Rudd Avenue on Saturday, May 11th as Portland celebrated the 200th anniversary of The Marquis De Lafayette’s visit to Portland on May 11th, 1825. The day’s celebrations began at Good Shepherd Church. On the corner of Rudd Ave. and Cedar Grove Terrace, beneath the Portland Mooring Rings, a commemorative plaque was unveiled.
American Legion Shawnee Post 193 11th Annual Easter Egg Hunt
The American Legion Shawnee Post 193 held its 11th Annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 19, 2025. As in past years, we partnered with Good Shepherd Catholic Parish and held the event on their grounds. There was a threat of rain that morning, but Mother Nature cooperated with us, and the event was a great success. We estimate 75 kids from 0-10 years old attended.
Neighborhood House Shines with Free Community Event
Neighborhood Nites is a free monthly event hosted by Portland nonprofit Neighborhood House, located at 201 North 25th Street. According to its website: “Neighborhood House has called the Portland area home for over 60 years.”
Delta Foundation Buys Old Portland Christian Building
In late December the Delta Foundation was able to close on the purchase of the old Portland Christian school building located at 2508 Portland Avenue. DELTA has provided free after school programs and summer camps to West Louisville youth in the gymnasium since 2019 and now are developing the campus into an opportunity center for West Louisville residents.
PlayPort Opens at Waterfront Park, Bringing New Connections to Portland
Waterfront Park will expand into the Portland neighborhood on March 26th with the opening of the first part of the phase IV expansion, PlayPort. The project, years in the making, is about more than just adding new park space—it’s about connecting neighborhoods and people in new and meaningful ways.
